There is a stretch of July on the Gulf Coast when the sand gets hot by ten in the morning and the water feels like a warm bath. Locals have a fix for that, and it is not another beach. It is a river.
About 33 miles north of Navarre Beach, roughly a 45-minute drive up FL-87, the Blackwater River runs cool and clear beneath longleaf pines. Blackwater River State Park protects 600 acres of it, and it makes one of the easiest day trips you can take from the island. Here is how to plan it.
Why the Blackwater River Is Worth the Drive
The river takes its name from its color. Water seeping out of Blackwater River State Forest is tinted with tannins from leaves and roots, which gives it a tea-dark cast. Underneath, the bottom is bright white sand. The contrast is the whole appeal: dark water sliding over pale sand, with wide sandbars and beaches curling along the bends.
The Muscogee name for it was Oka-lusa, meaning water black. Most of the stream flows through undeveloped state forest land, so the banks stay quiet and green. Blackwater Canoe Rental, the state park’s official river vendor, describes it as the only pristine sand-bottom river left in the United States.
The practical part matters too. Spring-fed and shaded, the river runs noticeably cooler than the Gulf in midsummer. Families who have had three straight days of sun and salt tend to find it a relief.
Tubing, Paddling, or Both
Blackwater Canoe Rental runs a full round-trip service. You park at Blackwater River State Park, they shuttle you upstream to a launch point, and you float back down to your car. When the trip is over you simply beach the boat where you started. No second vehicle, no logistics.
Current rates, per person:
- Tube float: $24, averaging 2.5 to 5 hours on the water
- Canoe day or short trip: $33, minimum two people per canoe
- Kayak day or short trip: $40
- Cooler or supply tube: $14
Children under 12 ride free in a canoe with two paying adults, and two adults plus two small kids fit comfortably in one boat. Trips are scheduled on the hour, and reservation lines are open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. seven days a week during the season at (850) 623-0235. Book ahead in July. Weekends fill.
Overnight canoe-camping trips are also available, starting at $50 for a half-day-plus-one-night, if anyone in the group wants to stretch it out.
What the Park Itself Costs
Blackwater River State Park is at 7720 Deaton Bridge Road in Milton, open 8 a.m. to sunset, 365 days a year. Entry is $4 per vehicle, paid at an honor box. It is cash only and correct change is required, so put four singles in the glove box before you leave the beach house.
Inside the park you will find large picnic pavilions, restrooms, outdoor showers, a nature trail, and sandy river beaches for swimming and sunbathing. The park phone is 850-983-5363. Note that the park has flagged GPS routing errors in the past, so check your route rather than trusting the pin blindly.
A Second Option: Coldwater Creek
If Blackwater is booked, Adventures Unlimited Outdoor Center sits on Coldwater Creek at 8974 Tomahawk Landing Road in Milton. They run canoe, kayak, tube, and paddleboard trips, plus ziplines and a challenge course, and they are open year-round. Dogs are welcome on the river for a $10 fee. Reservations: 850-623-6197.
How to Pack the Day
- Leave early. Trips launch on the hour and the water is at its quietest in the morning.
- Cash for the honor box. $4, exact change.
- Water shoes. The sandbars are soft, but roots and branches turn up in the shallows.
- Dry bag or dry box. Phones and tubes do not mix. The Blackwater Outpost at the park entrance sells dry boxes, ice, sunscreen, and snacks if you forget something.
- Sunscreen anyway. Shade comes and goes along the bends.
- Plan for four to five hours door to door on the water, plus the drive each way.
Coming Home to the Sound
The best part of a river day is the end of it. You are back on Navarre Beach by late afternoon, salt and river water both rinsed off, with the Santa Rosa Sound going glassy out front and the sunset still to come.
